We’ve listed the recipe below so you can try making this dish at home... Don’t forget to send us photos of your beautiful creations!
Here is the recipe:
Recipe ingredients are per serve - multiply the ingredients depending on how many mozzarella in carrozza you would like to make.
Ingredients
50g mozzarella
25g sautéed mushrooms
30g ham
2 slices of bread
Plain flour to coat
Bread crumbs to coat (panko always give that extra crunch!)
1 egg
200mL frying oil
Method
If you would like to sauté your mushrooms, simply toss your mushrooms for a couple of minutes in olive oil on medium-high heat. Cook until they have dried and will no longer release moisture when added to the sandwich. Season with salt and pepper and ensure mushrooms have cooled down prior to adding them to the carrozza.
Layer one piece of bread with ham, mushroom and then mozzarella. Place the second piece of bread on top and push firmly to ensure that the ingredients are secure inside the two slices of bread. Proceed to cut the crust off the edges of the bread.
Coat the carrozza with flour and ensure all areas are covered. Completely cover the carrozza in egg (depending on how many sandwiches you make, you may need to add another egg - simply add more eggs where necessary). Ensure that the opening of the sandwich on the sides are well covered in flour and egg, and then proceed to coat the sandwich with bread crumbs, also ensuring that all edges and sides are covered. Place in fridge to rest for 15 minutes.
To ensure the mozzarella liquid does not leak out of the sandwich when frying, coat the openings/edges of the sandwich again with more egg and bread crumbs. Place oil in a frypan and set to medium-high heat. This will ensure that the sandwich won’t cook too fast and will allow the mozzarella to melt inside the carrozza.
To test if oil is ready, sprinkle a few bread crumbs into oil and if they start frying straight away, the oil is ready. Carefully place the carrozza in the frypan and cook until each side has a golden brown colour.
Once the carrozza has cooked on both sides and has a beautiful golden brown colour, get on the couch, grab a blanket, put on a movie and enjoy eating this delicious culinary wonder
