A costly D-Day on September 15th, 1944 was just an opening stage of the horrific battle of Peleliu which would show how hard a fight really awaited the Marines on that little island in the days to come. Among the few civilians who witnessed the horrors of the battle was Time Correspondent Robert Martin, who described what it was like there, concluding that: “Peleliu is a horrible place”.
