During the early 1970s, the United States Air Force sought a new fighter aircraft that was both lightweight and maneuverable, as well as affordable, to complement their existing F-15 air superiority fighter. In 1974, General Dynamics and Northrop responded to the request with their prototypes, YF-16 and YF-17, respectively. The Air Force eventually chose the F-16.
Since then, the F-16 has evolved into an all-weather multirole aircraft. Its impressive maneuverability, armament, and sleek design have made it a popular choice among countries worldwide, with over 5,000 aircraft produced since its introduction almost 5 decades ago.
