Diet to Reduce Potassium Levels Naturally | Dr. Puru Dhawan
In this video, Dr. Puru Dhawan gives information about potassium and why it is important to manage potassium levels.
It is important to manage potassium levels as it helps to balance fluids, regulates nerve signals and generate muscle contractions. It also helps to reduce blood pressure and protect against stroke. Potassium levels above 5.0mEq/L cause fatigue and affect heart which further causes a heart attack. Heartbeat becomes arrhythmic due to high potassium levels. High potassium levels are more dangerous than urea or creatinine levels.
It is recommended to avoid rooty and leafy vegetables. Rooty vegetables like potato, sweet potato, arbi, beetroot, and radish.
And leafy vegetables like spinach, bathua, methi and sarso are highly restricted. A patient can eat low potassium vegetables like tomato, bottle gourd, ridge gourd, pointed gourd and pumpkin.
Low potassium vegetables prevent from cardiovascular disease. It is advised to leach high potassium vegetables. In leaching process important minerals, vitamins get removed along with potassium. So, it is advised to be done when potassium levels are above normal.
It is advised to avoid banana, kiwi, avocado, dates, dry fruits and citrus fruits. Metabolic acidosis occurs when our body produces excess acid or kidney do not remove it. A patient can eat apple, strawberry, grapes, muskmelon but portion size should not exceed 1 cup.
