Cracking day for a gravel ride, all be it cold, but this is to be expected …its winter!
Slightly longer video than normal just to give a better indication of the surfaces and topography for those that are interested.
The ride started at Bridge of Turk Café and headed up the 14.6% gradient to Glen Finglas Reservoir.
We took the North path to go around Meall Cala in a anti-clockwise direction. The path steadily climbed to 620m before heading back down towards the reservoir and the Brig of Turk Café.
For orientation Ben Ledi and Loch Katrine are shown on the map.
Charlie set off earlier… as he was on an analogue bike, whereas Jan and I were on ebikes.
We caught up with Charlie along the side of the reservoir while we were still on a tarmac road.
We also passed Beth who set off to walk part of the route.
Once we turned off onto the gravel track the climbing started In earnest and the views became more spectacular as we climbed.
We had to keep our eyes peeled for any puddles as they were all iced over, not surprising at -1 degrees.
The climbing saw anything from 9% to 20% gradient, so ebike certainly came into its own.
As we got closer to the highest point we could see over the back towards Ben More and a number of other snow covered munros.
The icicles on the trackside were a testament to how cold it was, they looked lovely sparkling in the sunlight.
Although this is trail has a fairly good surface throughout, there are places where water has washed away some of the surface to make it quite chunky, easy enough on a mountain bike, I’m guessing quite technical in places if you are on a gravel bike. Hopefully this video will give you an insight into this fantastic route.
Once we rounded the 620m cairn, it was time for the long descent all the way back to Brig of Turk.
It was great to just take in the fantastic views as the winter sun started to get lower and lower. It also got colder as we went into the shadows of the mountains.
Sadly the café was closed, so we had to find an alternative venue to warm up and fuel up, good old trust Station café in Aberfoyle.
