Hi, everyone, Aidan, here with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna be taking a look at the Yakima FatCat EVO 4 ski and snowboard carrier here on our 2021 Audi Q7. Now this is going to be a rooftop carrier that holds your gear in between these two jaws with these large rubber pads. These are gonna provide a good amount of cushioning, so, protection for your gear but it's also going to give a good amount of grip. So, when I latch this down fully, you can see our gear isn't going anywhere. I'm shaking the whole vehicle back and forth by the skis here, they're really strong in there.
Now, these jaws are really nice in the sense that this button on the end is very large. Some of the other carriers in the style don't have the best button and it makes using them a little bit harder. You gotta think, you're probably gonna have some big gloves or mittens on when you're using this so being able to open that maybe with the palm of your hand and not have that tactile use of your fingers is really good. These do also lock up, so, whenever they're closed, all of our gear is secure in the carrier. And with the way this mounts up the actual mechanism to attach this to your vehicle is actually locked in the carrier there too.
So everything is operated off of that one key right here, so, we don't have to have multiple locking points all throughout the carrier, keeping it really simple for us. So I'll get this unloaded here. There is also a Yakima FatCat EVO 6. It's a larger version of this that just has a higher capacity of skis and snowboards, depending on your gear, everything's gonna differ slightly with the capacities but I will give you a measurement of actual usable space. From inside edge to inside edge, you're looking at right about 22 inches of actual padded space in here for your gear.
So you can lay it out, see if it fits within those dimensions and if you need a little bit more, check out that EVO 6. Now with the way these attach, they are these bands around the bottom here, really low clearance, low profile, keeping everything nice and sleek. And you can see they stay on really well. Everything fits really well. And with the articulating point right here, if your roof rack maybe isn't perfectly level, you can slope and slant them to kind of match the curve of your roof a bit better, so, we're not damaging our gear.
And overall, I like this system of actually hauling our gear. You might be familiar with rooftop boxes. A lot of people do like those for skis and snowboards because it's enclosed and it really protects your gear, but those get expensive. They get very large and bulky. So, it's higher clearance on your roof and it's going to be harder to store in your garage. With this, you can see we're only adding 4 1/2 inches to the top of our crossbar. So, it's really low profile. They're gonna be easy to store in your garage in the summer and they aren't too expensive either. So, it's gonna be a really good option for you and it leaves some room to spare on your roof rack for some other gear, if you need it too. Thanks for watching..
