Centuries ago, the Māori people of New Zealand preserved severed heads, known as mokomokai, as gruesome trophies. The heads underwent a process involving boiling, smoking, drying, and dipping in shark oil. However, during the 1840s, British colonizers seized these artifacts. Major General Horatio Gordon Robley, who served in the British Army during the New Zealand Land Wars in the 1860s, was especially captivated and stole at least 35 heads for his collection.
