The Ten Plagues – Part III
Introduction:
Read Exodus 18:1, 10-11 The ten plagues served to show that Jehovah was greater than all the Egyptian gods. Jehovah was the only true God.
VI. The Sixth Plague – Boils (Exodus 9:8-12)
• Moses, not Aaron, was to throw the ashes (soot) into the air.
• Painful boils were even on their feet so that the magicians could not stand! Years later God warned Israel about painful results of not obeying Him. (Deuteronomy 28:25-29)
• This plague was against: Imhotep – god of medicine, Serapis – god of healing, as well as Setchmet and Hike. These gods were not able to protect Egyptians nor heal them.
VII. The Seventh Plague – Hail (Exodus 9:13-35)
• Thunder, lightning, and hail were very rare in Egypt. Since the flax and barley were destroyed, it possibly happened in January.
• This was an insult against several deities: Nut – sky goddess, who was supposed to protect the land from destruction, Shu – wind god, and Tefnut – moisture deity
• Pharaoh – “This time” (Verse 27) He had sinned in response to all the plagues! Purpose: “You may know the earth is the Lord’s.” (Verse 29) Note: Romans 9:17 and Psalms 24:1
VIII. The Eighth Plague – Locusts (Exodus 10:1-20)
• Locusts could destroy a field of crops in minutes.
• What the hail had left, the locusts destroyed.
• This plague was an attack on several Egyptian deities: Senehem – locust-headed god, Nepri – god of grain, Thermuthis – goddess of fertility and harvest, Seth – a god of crops, Ermutel – goddess of crops
• The plague was also to remind Israel of who Jehovah was. (Verse 2) (Psalms 78:5-7)
Invitation:
This account reminds us that when God judges, He does a thorough job. It’s a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. (Hebrews 10:31)
