The Pulitzer Center’s 2023 Climate and Labor Conference gathered over 30 journalists, academics, researchers, and social movement leaders from 16 nationalities to spark a discussion on the intersection of climate change and labor rights. Hosted in partnership with the University of Coimbra, the event connected the main topic of climate and labor to gender, health, rainforests, oceans, global power, and social justice.
Across two conference days, over 550 people from 55 countries tuned in to discussions online. The conversations were fueled by stories from the Pulitzer Center’s Your Work/ Environment initiative, a reporting and engagement project that supports investigations focused on climate change and its effects on workers and the universe of work. It explores how global climate risks are playing out in fields, forests, and on factory floors.
An emerging theme at the conference was one of allyship across sectors to solve problems and identify solutions. As researcher Boaventura Monjane said during a session on Climate, Labor, and Oceans, “I believe that both journalism and activism, as well as scholarship, can and should work for the transformation of the world towards a better world.”
