What will it take for Mississippi’s schoolchildren to catch up? COVID-19 has severely disrupted education, particularly in the 2020-2021 school year, forcing educators to hold classes with students not prepared for at-home virtual instruction. Mississippi Public Broadcasting is hosting a panel discussion of experts who are on the frontline of providing solutions to the complex problem of making up for months of “learning loss” due to the pandemic.
Achievement test scores, which were waived, yielded troubling data. In some school districts, student scores dipped significantly, adding pressure for educators and parents to develop strategies to accelerate student performance. But achieving better classroom results is a work in progress, with some educators saying incremental improvement is a more realistic goal. What are tactics to get students back on track? MPB’s panel of experts will share plans they have implemented in their school districts to close the gap. Experts also will discuss the impact “learning loss” has had on their students and the role parents need to play.
