Australians have been warned to be alert for symptoms of mpox, previously known as monkeypox, after new cases of the virus were recorded within our borders.
The World Health Organisation has declared the new spread a public health emergency, but Australian authorities are saying not to panic.
There are two major strains of the virus currently circulating: Clade 1 and Clade 2.
Clade 1 is believed to be a more serious and deadly form of mpox, which can spread through skin-to-skin contact. This variant is spreading in Africa, but no Clade 1 cases have been recorded in Australia.
The Clade 2 strain is believed to be less severe, less contagious and less deadly. Its subclade, known as Clade 2B, is the strain of Australia’s newest cases.
So what are the symptoms? Will mpox turn into another pandemic like Covid-19? And which groups are most at risk of getting mpox?
