In 1968, Leopold Stokowski and the American Symphony Orchestra gave the opening concert in the Madison Square Gardens new building. The programme included Schubert’s ‘Unfinished’ Symphony and part of one of the rehearsals was filmed. From that rehearsal, we see the 85-year-old Stokowski conducting the first movement with an astonishing vitality that quite belied his years.
