The independent candidate Emmanuel Macron took first place, with 23.8% of the vote. National Front leader, came second after she was backed by 21.5% of the electorate.
It turned out to be a very tight race with the remaining frontrunners having less than a third of a percentage point between them. Francois Fillon and Jean-Luc Melenchon are now out of the race.
