The 2022 midterm elections saw both Republicans and Democrats celebrating wins and bemoaning losses. However, in stark contrast to most of the country where Democrats gained seats in districts the voters rejected Donald Trump affiliated candidates, New York City (normally a Democratic bastion) saw the Republican party make inroads in traditionally blue districts.
Despite a solid victory for Governor Hochul, at a more local level, messaging around the issue of crime in NYC was at the forefront in communities with shifting demographics and apprehension about the Democratic response to crime. When the results came in, Democrats were quick to assign blame and Republicans immediately began wondering if the momentum of their messaging will last through 2024.
Does this mark a turning point in NYC politics? Who was to blame for the unexpected losses, if anyone? Will the outcomes ultimately change the priorities of policymakers at the city or state level? Our panelists discuss all this and more.
