"On February 11 I had taken a load of 11,000 tons to the port of Chornomorsk (in Ukraine). It took thirteen days from then until the unloading (of the cargo) and then this sad incident happened, war broke out and the port was under blockade by the Ukrainian military. Entry and exit to the port were shut down. We were a ship that had unloaded its cargo and waiting to depart but unfortunately, we weren't able to leave."

5. SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Ahmet Yucel Alibeyler, Captain of the Polarnet:
"There were two ships that left the port of Chornomorsk and then there was another, the Navi Star, that left from the port of Odessa. The three ships received a predetermined route from the joint coordination center, latitudes, longitudes and positions. There were 17 legs until arrival in Istanbul, short, mid and long range. These were of course dangerous areas, corridors, that had been cleared, demined."

8. SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Ahmet Yucel Alibeyler, Captain of the Polarnet:
"We navigated the short legs north to Odessa first where we waited for a bit and the three ships joined together. The three ships headed out in a convoy and were escorted by the harbour pilot, the harbour ship, until we got out of dangerous waters. We left behind the risky areas as we approached Romanian territorial waters.

STORYLINE:
The first of the ships to leave Ukraine under a deal to unblock grain supplies amid the threat of a global food crisis arrived at its destination in Turkey on Monday.
The Turkish-flagged Polarnet docked at Derince port in the Gulf of Izmit after setting off from Chornomorsk on Aug. 5 laden with 12,000 tons of corn.
The first ship to depart Ukraine, the Sierra Leone-flagged Razoni, which left on Aug. 1, still has not reached its destination in Lebanon and was anchored off Turkey's southern coast on Sunday evening, according to the Marine Traffic website.
Meanwhile, two more ships, carrying corn and soybeans, departed Ukraine's Black Sea ports on Monday, the Turkish Defence Ministry said.
The Sacura left Yuzhny carrying 11,000 tonnes of soybeans to Italy and the Arizona left Chornomorsk with 48,458 tonnes of corn bound for Iskenderun in southern Turkey.
A total of ten ships have now been authorized to sail under the grain deal between Ukraine and Russia, which was brokered by Turkey and the United Nations – eight outbound and two headed for Ukraine.
Four ships that left Ukraine on Sunday are expected to anchor near Istanbul on Monday evening, the Defence Ministry said. They are due to be inspected on Tuesday.
Under the arrangement, ships leaving Ukraine are checked by officials from the three countries and the U.N. to make sure they carry only grain, fertilizer or food and not any other commodities. Inbound vessels are checked to ensure they are not carrying weapons.
