DIY Above the Garage Door Storage is the answer to the problem that we in suburbia face. Messy garages are the worst, when the garage is messy than it is hard to do other projects and even harder to stay motivated to keep the yard and house organized.
Almost every garage in the world has some sort of void above the garage door and this tutorial provides the answer!
Every door is different and every garage has different amounts of space so be sure to adapt these steps to your own garage. The most important detail is to measure the space above the door with the door open and continually test your measurements. During construction make multiple checks by opening the door carefully to assure that you are not blocking the door from opening.
Even after you finish the project it is important to check the space after to have put all the weight on the shelf. The weight of the load can cause the storage to sag and this can also be a big problem.
I estimate the DIY project cost me about $75 and took 6 hours of work. I luckily had the necessary tools to make the job easier. Even if you don't have the best tools don't be afraid to try this. Just take it slow and take your time!
