교육부, 대학에 개강연기 권고…오늘 부총리•총장 회의
Hundreds of kindergartens and elementary schools in Korea have temporarily closed as fears rise over the outbreak.
And now, universities are also closing their doors.
Lee Kyung-eun reports.
South Korea's education ministry has recommended that all universities delay their spring semester.
It made the recommendation on Tuesday,... amid growing concerns over the spread of the coronavirus upon the return of Chinese students.
Some 70-thousand international students from China are set to come back to their schools in South Korea after the Lunar New Year holiday.
The recommendation, however, is not legally forced upon institutions, meaning that they can decide whether to implement related policies.
Each school is likely to take a different approach depending on the number of Chinese students it has.
But many universities have already taken related steps voluntarily.
In Seoul, Chung-ang University, Seoul National University, and Sogang University have postponed the start of their semesters by two weeks while Kyung Hee University postponed its opening by one week.
Chung-ang University has also cancelled its entrance ceremony and orientation for new students.
Graduation ceremonies will not be carried out at Korea University, Myongji University, Hongik University.
Meanwhile, to help those foreign students who are stuck in China, the Education Ministry had previously laid out guidelines for universities to follow, such as providing e-classes and allowing students to take a break in their first semester of freshman year which is something typically not allowed in Korea.
The ministry is set to hold another meeting with university officials on Tuesday afternoon for further discussions on the matter.
