To prevent a global atomic fallout, the US and the Soviet Union signed the Partial Test Ban Treaty in 1963. The agreement banned any type of nuclear testing.
But both countries figured out more conventional ways to continue evaluating the effects of nuclear detonations. For the US, the answer laid in the classic and trusty TNT explosives.
In one particular test, the US military was able to amass more than 1,500 tons of TNT to test the effects of nuclear blasts in old World War 2 Navy ships.
