How to properly find what size skate you are:
1. Make sure the skate is untied properly when you put it on (laces aren't in the top three eyelets)
2. When you stand up with the skate untied, your big toe should graze the toe cap.
3. From a sitting position, kick your heel to the back of of the boot. This will bring your foot back enough that your toe shouldn't be touching anymore.
4. Tighten the first several eyelets so they are snug but not too tight. It's the last three (or four) eyelets that you want to pull tight. This will further pull your foot back in your skate and also what keeps your heel in place. (You don't want your heel to be moving around in your skate)
5. Before taking your skate off, you should untie the the top three eyelets again. You want it to easily slide off. If you have to reef on your skate to remove it, you will ruin the fit of the skate. The closer it forms to your foot the better.
*How snug a player fits their skate will vary depending on the circumstance. If your feet are still growing, you probably don't want your toe grazing the toe cap in step 2. Maybe give yourself a little more clearance so you don't grow out of your skates mid season. If your feet are done growing - I personally liked my skates as snug as possible. My toe would be pushing against the end when the skates were untied and just barely off the toe cap after tightening them.
**You will also find that there's a bit more room as you break them in.
