President Joe Biden has officially announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election.
In a three-minute video that opened with imagery from the Jan 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of then-President Donald Trump, Biden urged voters to give him more time to complete what he started when he first took office. In 2019, Biden pledged to heal the 'soul of the nation' after the years of Trump's divisive presidency.
Biden is still expected to face a tough fight to retain the presidency, given the nation's deep partisan divisions, his low approval ratings, and concerns about his age (Biden will be 81 on Election Day 2024).
However, multiple reports in recent days indicate Biden is confident his accomplishments and experience will ease any concerns about his age. Biden would be 86 at the end of a hypothetical second term.
Vice President Kamala Harris, the highest-ranking woman and person of color in the U.S. government, will be his running mate again, and was featured prominently throughout Biden's campaign launch video. The duo face a growing number of Republicans vying for the Oval Office, including not only Trump, but former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, SC Sen. Tim Scott, and, potentially, FL Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is expected to announce his candidacy soon as well.
