Our industry is constantly evolving, guided by the shift towards data-driven decision-making in the management of our gardens. Understanding how to interpret data to dial in our irrigation strategy can make a significant impact on the yield and quality of our final product. Once we understand the key concepts and principles of creating a precision irrigation strategy, we have the power to shape and guide our plants' growth in a desired direction.
We invite you to join us on a journey through our Precision Irrigation Strategy Series. @Saltsandleds will guide you through the process of dialing in your irrigation strategy with information gathered through years of experience and collaboration with our team of Facility Advisors. Our first section of the series will lay the foundation for a successful precision irrigation strategy. We will go over common terms, and introduce you to the necessary tools that will empower you to make the most of every precious drop of water.
Part 1 of 5.

Common Irrigation Terms:
Volumetric Water Content Percent (VWC): the volume of water a substrate is holding at any given time.
Shot: a single irrigation event.
Maintenance Shots: P2 irrigation events that maintain your Peak VWC% Target throughout the day.
Field Capacity: The maximum water-holding point of a substrate or the point in which runoff occurs.
Full Saturation: When a substrate can no longer hold anymore water and VWC% can no longer increase.
Runoff: Water that is drained from a substrate.
Dryback: The period between irrigation events when the substrate is drying out.
The difference in VWC% from the last irrigation event of the day to the first irrigation event of the following day.
Additional Dryback: The decrease in VWC% that occurs during P3, after the lights turn on and before the first irrigation event of the day. I like to use the saying “transition before irrigation”
Pore water EC (pwEC): The EC of the water within the pores of the substrate. (We also refer to this as Substrate EC in these videos)
Input EC: The EC of the solution applied through irrigation events.
Peak VWC % Target: The VWC % established by the last P1 event and maintained throughout the P2 phase.
EC Stacking: The strategy of limiting runoff and/or increasing dryback to increase substrate EC
