Door County, located in northeastern Wisconsin, has a rich history of stone quarrying that dates back to the late 1800s. The area's abundant limestone rock formations made it an ideal location for quarrying operations.

In the late 1800s, the first commercial stone quarries began to operate in Door County. These quarries were typically small-scale and locally owned, using hand tools and horse-drawn carts to extract limestone. However, as demand for limestone grew and technology advanced, quarrying operations expanded in scale and efficiency.

One of the notable quarries in Door County was the Leathem D. Smith Quarry, which was established in the late 1800s and operated for over a century. The quarry was located near Sturgeon Bay and became a significant source of limestone for construction projects in the Midwest.

At its peak, the Leathem D. Smith Quarry employed hundreds of workers and used mechanized equipment such as steam-powered and later diesel-powered machinery for cutting, drilling, and transporting limestone. The quarry produced high-quality limestone that was used in various construction projects, including buildings, roads, and bridges.

The Leathem D. Smith Quarry also had tunnels that were used for extracting limestone, transportation within the quarry, and housing infrastructure such as conveyor belts and pipes. These tunnels provided access to the limestone deposits and facilitated the efficient movement of materials and resources.

Over time, as the demand for limestone declined and easily accessible limestone deposits decreased, many of the quarries in Door County ceased operations. The Leathem D. Smith Quarry was eventually closed, and the land was converted into the Old Stone Quarry County Park, which is now a popular recreational area with hiking trails and waterfront access.

Today, remnants of the historic stone quarrying industry can still be seen in Door County, with abandoned quarries and quarry-related infrastructure serving as reminders of the region's past. The stone quarries in Door County played an important role in the local economy and provided valuable limestone resources for construction projects, leaving a lasting impact on the history and landscape of the area.
