Battery grips are really useful, particularly for a smallish camera like the Nikon D5200. They serve three primary purposes: They carry two batteries, so you can effectively double the usage time between recharge. this is very handy if you are covering a sporting event, or shooting video. Battery grips also have a shutter button on the bottom right corner. This makes shooting portraits much easier. Finally, the battery grip will add bulk to your camera, which is useful for this kind of camera. It makes it easier to hold and balances against some of the longer lenses.
The most difficult part of fixing the grip is removing the door of your battery slot. You need to be firm and steady. The door is quite robust. If you open the door to about 45 degrees and then gently twist the door so the the top comes out first, it is fairly simple to do. The battery grip will have a slot for you to put the door into so that you don't lose it.
