The Sack of Rome in 1527 is one of the bloodiest and most dramatic moments in the history of the Eternal City. On May 9th, chaos erupted when an enraged imperial army of 20,000 mercenaries stormed Rome. These soldiers, mostly unpaid and restless, included German Landsknechts who had no love for the Pope.
With the city under attack, Pope Clement VII sought refuge in Saint Peter’s Basilica. Facing overwhelming odds, the untested Swiss Guard—just 189 strong—stood as the last line of defense. Arquebus fire and chaos filled the basilica as the guards fought valiantly to buy time.
Amid the carnage, only 42 guards survived. They escorted the Pope through the secret Passetto di Borgo, an elevated escape passage leading to Castel Sant’Angelo. With imperial troops hot on their heels, the Pope narrowly reached safety.
Meanwhile, the remaining Swiss Guards made their final stand on the basilica steps. All 147 gave their lives to delay the attackers. Their ultimate sacrifice saved the Pope and cemented their legacy as symbols of courage and loyalty.
The events of that day remain a cornerstone of Swiss Guard history and an enduring reminder of their devotion.
