2. SOUNDBITE (English) George W. Bush, US President:
"When it comes to defending our freedom, the United States of America will stand united and stand strong. The choice is up to the United Nations to show its resolve. The choice is up to Saddam Hussein to fulfill his word. And if neither of them acts, the United States in deliberate fashion will lead a coalition to take away the world's worst weapons from one of the world's worst leaders."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Tom Daschle, US Senate Majority Leader:
"Certainly the White House has moved. In my view, there's still improvement that I think can be made, and as long as I think there is at least a chance that we could make additional improvements, I want to try to do that. I think it's too early to give up in making the effort."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Tom Daschle, US Senate Majority Leader:
"I'm still confident that at the end of the day, we're going to be able to develop a broad bipartisan consensus about this authorisation, this resolution, and that is every bit my expectation."

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Henry Hyde, Chairman, House International Relations Committee:
"We have no choice but to act as a sovereign country prepared to defend ourselves, with our friends and allies if possible, but alone if necessary. There can be no safety if we tie our fate to the cooperation of others, only a hope that all will be well, a hope that eventually must fail."

16. SOUNDBITE (English) Colin Powell, US Secretary of State:
"The discussions are intricate, but I am optimistic that we will find a way forward in the Security Council. We must find a way forward if the Security Council will retain its relevance. There can be no doubt about the determination of the United States, and I believe, of all nations in the world, including Russia, to disarm Iraq. We can no longer turn away from this danger. We have to disarm Iraq and the president is quite willing to do whatever is necessary to bring that about."

STORYLINE:
President George W Bush on thursday challenged the United Nations to stand with the United States to disarm Saddam Hussein, or stand aside.
His comments came as Russia criticised a tough new US-sponsored resolution on Iraq, and support mounted in the US Congress for a measure authorising use of force against Saddam.
Bush reached an agreement over the measure with House leaders on Wednesday and is expected to win full congressional approval as early as next week. But the Senate is still wrestling with the wording of a resolution.
Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle wants to put some limits on the use of force - such as tying it to support from allies.
