From the tragic car accident that changed her life in 2012 to standing atop the podium at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, Avani Lekhara's journey is nothing short of extraordinary. Overcoming immense physical and emotional challenges, she found her passion in shooting, inspired by her father and Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra.
Starting her shooting career in 2015, Avani quickly rose to prominence. By 2020, she made history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a Paralympic gold, setting a new Paralympic record in the 10m air rifle standing SH1 event. She didn't stop there, clinching a bronze in the 50m rifle 3 positions SH1 event, making her the first Indian woman to win multiple medals in a single Paralympic Games.
Beyond her remarkable achievements on the range, Avani is a dedicated law student at Rajasthan University and an active advocate for empowering others with disabilities. Her accolades include the prestigious Khel Ratna Award, Padma Shri, and numerous other honors that recognize her indomitable spirit and contributions to sports.
As Avani prepares to represent India once again at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, let's rally behind her and celebrate her inspiring journey. She embodies the spirit of perseverance, excellence, and national pride.
