I have the Amex gold card and amex gold delta skymiles card and usually use my points to book flights because I find it's the best way to use my credit card points for travel. When booking my recent flight to DC, I decided to transfer some of my amex points to JetBlue in order to book my flight. Some people may opt to pay for their flights in cash and use their points on hotel bookings instead. Some people use their points for flights and hotels!
