After Vice President Kamala Harris' surprise appearance on "Saturday Night Live", senior Republican commissioner on the Federal Communications Commission, Brendan Carr, claimed that her appearance violated the Equal Time Rule.
Carr posted to X, writing that "this is a clear and blatant effort to evade the FCC’s Equal Time rule. The purpose of the rule is to avoid exactly this type of biased and partisan conduct — a licensed broadcaster using the public airwaves to exert its influence for one candidate on the eve of an election."
The FCC's Equal Time Rule is a set of rules that "seek to ensure that no legally qualified candidate for office is unfairly given less access to the airwaves – outside of bona fide news exemptions – than their opponent."
The commissioner alleged that NBC has "structured this appearance in a way that evades these requirements."
The creator of SNL, Lorne Michaels, previously said in an interview that he would not be reaching out to either presidential candidate because "you can’t bring the actual people who are running on because of election laws and the equal time provisions,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
Harris made her appearance on SNL during the cold open, playing herself opposite of her impersonator, Maya Rudolph. She delivered the iconic "Live from New York it's Saturday Night" and urged voters to vote for her on November 5th.
