There are about 6,000 lakes in Lithuania, covering 950 km², or 1.5% of the territory of Lithuania. The lakes are not evenly distributed; most are situated in the Baltic Highlands, which begin near the border with Poland on the southeast and extend northward along the border with Belarus to Latvia.
About 1,200 are supported only by groundwater and neither receive nor distribute any surface water. However, many of the other lakes are interconnected by complex passages and rivulets. These lake systems are major tourist attractions in Aukštaitija National Park and are popular with kayakers. The lakes in and near the Molėtai district municipality are a weekend destination for many residents of Vilnius, who have built summer houses and villas in the area.
The great majority of Lithuania's lakes formed after the Wisconsin glacier retreated. The oldest date from about 13,000 years before the present.

Elektrėnai Reservoir (Lithuanian: Elektrėnų marios), located south of the city of Elektrėnai, Lithuania, is the third-biggest artificial lake in Lithuania. It was created in 1961 by damming the Strėva River. It supplies cooling water to the 1,800 MW Elektrėnai Power Plant. A number of villages were drowned by the reservoir; over 140 households were relocated. The reservoir also covered eight other lakes.
The reservoir covers about 1,264 hectares, with depths of over 30 meters.

The Elektrėnai Power Plant or Lithuania Power Plant (Lithuanian: Lietuvos elektrinė) is an 1,800-MW electrical generating station near Elektrėnai, Lithuania, about 50 kilometres (31 mi) west of Lithuania's capital, Vilnius. It is operated by Lietuvos Elektrinė, a subsidiary of Lietuvos Energija.
The plant was built in stages between 1960 and 1972. The Strėva River was dammed to supply it with cooling water, creating the Elektrėnai Reservoir. As of 2008 the plant comprised eight units fired with natural gas, heavy fuel oil, and a bitumen-based fuel known as Orimulsion, imported from Venezuela. It was designed as a base load plant, and generated about 10 TWh per year until 1992. Its operations were then reduced to about 5% of its capacity, since it acted only as a reserve in the Lithuanian power system. In 2012 9th block had been opened.
The plant also supplies district heating to the town of Elektrėnai, established in 1962 to support its workers. An interesting feature is that two of the three chimneys of EPP serve also as electricity pylons.
