Fire victims of the Oregon Road and Gray Fires have told me the month since the start of the fires has felt like an eternity. A lot of fire victims have questions, many of them unanswered.
The community has rallied around these victims, raising an overwhelming amount in donations. Fire victims have asked where this money is going, when it will be distributed, and more.
Victoria Aguilar and her partner were enjoying living out of town, growing their garden, and tending to their animals when they lost everything in the Gray Fire. Since the fire, they've even had their few surviving possessions stolen. She says it's been a whirlwind of emotions.
"Anger, just that people would steal from us when we don't have anything is hard,” said Aguilar.
With little insurance help, Victoria wants to know whether she has help on the way as she pays for asbestos testing, debris removal, and more.
"I really just hope that we get answers, so many people just want to know what's coming, what's not coming, if anything is coming, you know?"
We took Victoria's questions to the Innovia Foundation, who is handling a large amount of the donations. They told us instead of a tidal wave of cash, expect a constant stream. Right now, the foundation is focusing on getting funds to victims through non-profits like the Salvation Army. But, years down the road, is when a lot of this money will reach victims.
"Case managers get connected to every family who've been impacted, those case managers will work on an individual recovery plan," said Molly Sanchez, Chief Community Investment Officer for the Innovia Foundation.
From here, their long-term recovery group will then help you with the financial assistance you need.
The Innovia Foundation says you can call them for help with your specific situation.
