A public menorah display to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah in Oakland was destroyed on Wednesday, prompting a police hate crime investigation. Oakland police said the vandalism of the menorah at Lake Merritt is believed to have occurred before 1:30 a.m. Photos shared by the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Bay Area showed broken-off pieces of the menorah strewn on the ground and profane graffiti written on the stand where the menorah had stood.
