When excessive immunoglobulin A accumulates in your kidneys, it can harm the blood vessels responsible for filtering waste. If your doctor suspects you have IgA nephropathy, also known as Berger’s disease, a kidney biopsy may be necessary to confirm the diagnosis. There are different methods for obtaining a kidney tissue sample. A percutaneous kidney biopsy uses a thin needle and ultrasound guidance, while a more invasive open kidney biopsy is performed under general anesthesia.
