(21 Jul 2017) Israeli military forces fired tear gas and used water cannons against Palestinian protesters who hurled stones at the Israeli forces in Bethlehem on Friday.
Palestinian Islamic leaders in Jerusalem urged the faithful not to attend local mosques on Friday but to go to Jerusalem to pray.
Meanwhile in Jerusalem, Israeli police clashed with Palestinians after prayers were held in protest outside a major shrine.
Hundreds prayed at the holy compound, sacred to both Muslims and Jews, police said. Friday prayers typically draw tens of thousands.
Israel installed metal detectors at gates to the site after Palestinian gunmen killed two policemen there last week.
Palestinian Muslim leaders claim the devices are an Israeli attempt to expand control over site, but Israel denies the allegations saying the devices are to prevent more attacks.
