The crime statistics for the period between July and September 2021 show that 6 163 people were killed in South Africa. Police Minister Bheki Cele released the quarterly crime statistics for the third quarter earlier today. The increase in the number of murders has been attributed to the July unrests that gripped parts of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. The number of rape cases has also increased in that reporting period. 9 556 rape cases were reported. There was also an increase in incidents of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, while robberies at residential premises or housebreaking, which has been described as a category of crime South Africans fear the most, have decreased by 8.5%.
