Mótsog tells the tale of his friendship with Durin I and how his treachery came to be, when he was left to rule Gundabad and lost all his sons but one to the hands of the Orcs, the anger as he felt Durin had abandoned them, the jealousy seeing the Elves wielding mithril weapons, the pride reforging those weapons into seven war-hammers and the birth of the Greymauls. Thus, a war against Durin and the Longbeards began that lasted for many years. Fearing Durin’s might, Mótsog ordered the creation of a city high in the mountains, Biriz-zahar, and allied with the Orcs and trolls to defend it. Durin decided to give himself in to gain access to the city while his army came through secret paths. However, when the Dwarves were in the thickest of battle, Sauron sent nine great dragons and the Orcs and trolls turned on the Greymauls. Even Askâdurs, later known as Durin’s Bane, was sent to obliterate the Dwarves. Faced with death, Durin and Mótsog chose to set aside their differences and fight together. The battle was so fierce that the mountain was sundered, and the blows of the mithril hammers were so ferocious that all dragons who survived would live in fear of them forevermore, Hrímil included. When Mótsog concludes his tale, Durin regains his memories of his previous six lives and recounts what happened after the Sunder-battle: how Mótsog asked for his own death but instead found Durin’s mercy, how the Greymauls returned to Gundabad and shorn their beards as a reminder of their crimes. Mótsog secluded himself Deep Beneath Gundabad, and with time only his Rebellion was remembered. Only Durin came to visit, until one day Mótsog fell into a deep sleep through which he was able to see the many trials of the dwarves, until Durin heard his words at Winterstith and returned to reclaim Gundabad. Knowing that his penance is coming to an end, Mótsog vows to do whatever Durin commands in the time he has left. Durin asks Mótsog to join the Gabil’akkâ in their fight against Hrímil and calls for a Dwarrowmoot in the Thing-fold.
