The Grey Woman by Elizabeth Gaskell was published in 1865 in London in a collection known as *The Grey Woman & Other Tales*. By this time, Mrs Gaskell was the very famous author of a number of blockbuster novels. This was also the year in which she suddenly died.

The Grey Woman is not a ghost story, but rather a Gothic romance full of castles with passages, highwaymen, wild country on the borders of France and Germany , disguises and double-dealing.
