The small pacific island nation of Tonga has been a rugby nursery for many decades. In fact, many teams including the All Blacks and Wallabies have players eligible to play for Tonga.
Unfortunately, while many of these players would love to represent their heritage and in some instances country of birth, the financial incentives other countries can offer are too significant.
In this video I explore the possible rugby side Tonga could have fielded at the 2023 Rugby World Cup and ... it leaves plenty for the mind to wonder. Could they win the World Cup? and what would happen to those countries that depend so heavily on Tongan rugby players?
I personally would love to see Tonga turn into a rugby union powerhouse, especially because rugby league have managed to engage in a 'Polynesian revolution' of pacific island talent, and by strategically allowing their international teams to be competitive they are winning many of the players and fans. A video for a later date...
