This Watercolor Painting, Light at Sunset, was painted using the color Yellow Orange predominately and mixing with the other primary colors, Yellow and Red to produce Red-Orange, Yellow Orange , and warm grey with its complement Blue.
Holbein Artist 108 Watercolors are available on my website and feature the colors of Orange. One of the Oranges is used in the painting Light at Sunset in this video.
The reference photo shows the Palm Trees, Water, and background used to sketch the shape and structure of the painting. The value study is the plan for the lights and darks of the painting and establishes the Focal Point of the painting.
A color mixing chart was developed to see the variety of colors using the Orange color mixed with the other primary colors Yellow and Red.
A limited palette of Holbein Artist Watercolors: Yellow Orange, Ultramarine Blue, Yellow Lemon, Pyrrole Red, and Burnt Sienna were used to paint all the colors of the painting.
The brushes used were the Silver Brush Atelier Hake and #8 Black Velvet Round and a Natural Hair Quill. The watercolor technique of using a loaded Qulll Brush and painting with a minimum stroke to cover the Background, Middle Ground and Foreground. Picking a new color and using the same brush loaded with the old color of Sunset Sky will ensure a painting with a variety and one-of-a-kind color. The Hake brush was used to cover the background sky, middleground water and foreground beach using water to minimumize the strokes to cover the area. The #8 Round brush was used for details and adding interest to the painting.
Framing the painting with a Light and Dark colored matt shows the different effects for the final presentation of the painting, “Light at Sunset.”
Tip of the Day – Mix the colors of Orange and Red along with Yellow and Burnt Sienna to mix a variety of colors. Remember the complementary color to enhance to contrast of the color used.
