David Bernstein: Good afternoon and welcome to Wembley. I'd like to start with a couple of thank-yous. First, to my Club England colleagues here for their tremendous efforts and support during what has been a challenging week.
Secondly, to The FA Board. I've had a tremendous amount of support from the Board. It's a 14 person Board who provided a unified view and a tremendous amount of backing.
I would also like to mention the level of football expertise on that Board. We have people with huge knowledge of the game and the guidance and help they have given during this period has been very important.
I would like to publicly thank Fabio Capello for all of the work he has done. He has provided us with two qualifications for two tournaments. Firstly, the World Cup and now EURO 2012 and I want to emphasise that all of the way through his time with us, and yesterday, he has acted with dignity and honour. He is an honourable person and we concluded our meeting with a handshake.
Any reports of 'storming out' are not true and are a complete misrepresentation of fact.
Now, I've been in football for nearly 20 years and I have a good understanding of relationships with Managers. I do agree that the Manager is the most important person in a football club or an organisation like this, but there are moments when the Board and the Chairman have to step up to the plate when strong leadership is required.
I would emphasise that Fabio has had 100 per cent support from myself and the organisation through his tenure here.
For the sake of clarity I will recap on recent events. We all believed that the John Terry case would be dealt with by March or April. When it was postponed, we were all taken by surprise so the Board made a quick and unanimous decision regarding the captaincy.
I informed Fabio on Thursday evening as quickly as I could once the decision had been made and that communication with Fabio was made before the announcement on Friday morning.
Fabio wasn't happy but he accepted the Board's decision. On Sunday, Fabio conducted an interview with an Italian broadcaster. That caused conjecture and huge public debate and produced an unsatisfactory situation.
Yesterday, we had a meeting with Fabio which lasted a little under an hour. It was a very detailed meeting with questions and answers by us.
We adjourned the meeting and an hour later, I had another meeting by myself with Fabio in his office. It was at that time that he offered his resignation and I, on behalf of the Board, agreed that this was the right decision for The FA.
I want to emphasise that the meetings were professional and amicable.
With regards to the future, I'm very pleased to announce that Stuart Pearce will manage the England team against Holland. He has huge experience both outside and inside this organisation and is of course the Manager of the England Under-21 team and has been with Fabio for some time and knows all of the players very well.
I have confidence in Stuart and we are in good hands.
