Alien: Isolation - The best thing in the franchise besides the first two films.

Alien: Isolation, released in 2014, is a rarity in the AAA gaming space for what it did. The Alien series has since its share of ups and (mostly) downs over the years, including the launch of Aliens: Colonial Marines the year prior.

Alien Isolation bucked the conventional trends at the time and still does. Alien Isolation is a game whose core design wouldn't feel out of place for a game that came out in the early to mid-2000s. A time when games with large budgets weren't all pulling from the same template or cookie-cutter design as they have been since the late 2000s.

Alien Isolation takes some bold design choices to create a more authentic experience for the franchise as opposed to copping modern design trends and shoving them in, and it's so much better for it.

Instead of taking queues from Aliens, Alien Isolation takes its queues from the original 1979 film Alien and creates an excellent title that takes several elements from immersive sims and survival horror to make an extremely faithful sequel to the original 1979 film with Amanda Ripley. Barring a few issues (the pacing, and game length), Alien: Isolation is one of the best games to come out in the last decade.

When it's firing on all cylinders, which it does for a large portion of the game, Alien Isolation a phenomenal game that has you on the edge of your seat for the play-through and an unforgettable experience.

Yet some pacing issues and its run time do detract from the overall experience of Alien Isolation.

The team managed to put together a well-made licensed game, with a few exceptions (like Arkham games), tend to be just simple cash grabs. And for a series that had been butchered throughout the years, whether from some of the films to some of the video games, Alien Isolation ranks as some of the best work in the Alien franchise, right up there with the first two films.
