🔨Aligning with an existing wall🔨

Remodeling is always a challenge 😆

Working in an old home and trying to align a new tub surround with existing walls can be a challenge
In older homes there is typically plaster walls which are way thicker than traditional drywall
In this home there was a combination, plaster on one side & drywall on the other
Overall width between framing was 61 1/4"

I had originally shimmed out the walls to over come that 1 1/4" difference
The result was backer board sticking outside of the finish wall area
There is really no good way to finish this when tiling...

Whether the existing wall is plumb or not, the objective is to align the new backer board up with the existing wall
Tile will be set on top and a tile edging will finish the edges of tile

The tub flange is the toughest part of this equation to overcome
My suggestion is to keep the backer board even with the tub flange
Butting backer board on top of flange and keeping in line with flange


This Jacuzzi tub has a very thick flange (about 3/8" thick)
If you align framing with the back of flange, it will be a good position of backer board 👍

Use 3" deck screws so you have easy ability to adjust things

Once bottom of stud is fastened
Use the backer board as a guide to position framing
Backer board even with existing wall

Corner framing same idea
Keep stud tight to back of the tub flange & fasten with a screw

Adjust stud to plumb & fasten

For center stud, simply sister on to existing stud
Keep bottom even with back of tub flange

Use a straight edge to keep aligned with other studs

Fasten into place 😊

Fill in & shim corner stud to meet flush with new framing

Repeat same process for plumbing wall
Use backer board as a guide to align framing to existing wall

Framing should be have support every 16" for proper backer board support
