There is a quote typically attributed to Russian emperor Alexander III which reads: Russia has only two allies — its military and navy. When it comes to conquest, it seems he forgot Russia's third ally: the Church. While it gave its blessing to many a war fought by the Russian Empire, it was almost non-existent under Soviet rule. But now, after 1991, the Russian Orthodox Church regained its ground and Patriarch Kirill keeps true to the tradition — he is among the most vocal supporters of the war in Ukraine.
