America's military footprint in the Middle East has been shrinking for years.
From the beginning of the withdrawal of US troops in Iraq in 2007 to the most recent retreat from Afghanistan, the Pentagon's presence has declined.
Despite that, President Joe Biden's administration has continued to reassure Middle East allies of its commitment to regional stability and security.
But traditional alignments between nations have shifted and the influence of world powers has changed.
