The latest on Quinn Ewers at Texas Longhorns football and the news on NIL money for Texas athletes.
Geoff Ketchum, publisher of Orangebloods.com, along with the Texas Longhorns football beat reporter, Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods.com discuss the latest on Quinn Ewers to Texas, NIL deals and what it all means for Texas football in recruiting and the transfer portal.
You have probably heard a lot lately when it comes to Name, Image and Likeness with Texas Longhorns football players. First there was the establishment of the Clark Field Collective, which already has $10-million and is searching for Texas-Exes to fund and support Texas athletes through NIL endeavors. Then, this week Horns with Heart popped up.
According to their press release: “'Horns with Heart' was formed specifically to create an avenue by which University of Texas student-athletes can be empowered to make positive impacts on their communities and charities close to their hearts while utilizing their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL),” the group said in a press release. “The new Texas NIL law which went into effect on July 1, 2021 changes an athlete’s ability to use their NIL. This has created a unique opportunity for a charitable program to be created that will benefit players, charitable causes, and the University of Texas all collaboratively, and Horns with Heart was created with exactly that purpose in mind.”
Ketch and Anwar also discuss the latest on Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns pursuit of the top QB in the 2021 class Quinn Ewers. It's clear based on the people that Ketch has spoken with that NIL money is a huge part of the Quinn Ewers recruitment.

What we are starting to see as a market for the athletes is starting to take shape after the legalization of the name, image and likeness rights for college athletes is the different ways in which college athletes are taking advantage of their NIL rights. Texas has deep pocketed alumni and the creation of Clark Field Collective and Horns with Heart are examples of Texas-Exes throwing money at athletes.
Ketch also brings up the elephant in the room when it comes to college athletes getting paid and that is that it's not a new phenomenon in college athletics. People that are pushing back against NIL and the line of "cheating," these opportunities have always existed in college athletics and at a minimum NIL rights has helped usher these opportunities out of the darkness and into the light.
