Mitrovica, a city in Kosovo, has long been a focal point of ethnic tension between Albanians and Serbians. The roots of the conflict trace back to the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, leading to the Kosovo War in 1999. The city is divided by the Ibar River, with the northern part predominantly inhabited by Serbs and the southern part by mostly Albanians. The struggle for control and the desire for independence by the Albanian majority clashed with the Serb minority's resistance, leading to a de facto division of the city.
