The most active volcano in Indonesia, Mount Merapi, erupted on Saturday, spewing hot gas clouds and volcanic ash into the air and causing a lava flow. The ash reportedly covered several nearby villages and toxic gases have forced the area's tourism industry to halt temporarily. Although there have been no casualties reported, residents and visitors have been advised to steer clear of the area. Mount Merapi is situated on the border of Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces and is located just 30 km from Yogyakarta.
Mount Merapi had already been on the country's second-highest alert level following eruptions in 2020. The last major eruption occurred in 2010, with several minor eruptions since then that involved hot gas and lava flows. Despite being one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, Mount Merapi continues to be a popular tourist destination, offering thrilling hiking trails and a stunning sunrise view from the summit. Along with other volcanoes such as Mount Semeru and Mount Bromo, Mount Merapi is a favorite destination for adventure seekers in Indonesia. However, with the recent eruption, tourists are advised to stay away from the area until the situation is deemed safe.
