There are some key features you need to look out for when choosing an electric drum set to buy. It's essential that you get access to certain practice tools such as a built in metronome for example and I'm going to give you some tips on what you should know before you buy your first e-kit at any budget. You don't need to spend a fortune to get a good electronic kit.

The first piece of advice is to make sure the drum module has a 'Mix in' function, which will allow you to connect your phone or iPad to the kit's brain and play music through the same speaker or headphones. Most electric drum monitors such as my Roland PM100 will also have a 2nd Line input which will also give you this capability, however it's much nicer where possible to have it on the module itself as you don't have to then reach down to the amp just to change the volume.
Next we look at the size of the pads on the kit itself. Larger mesh skins are going to be better for most people as they offer a more realistic feel, more like an acoustic drum kit than the rubber pads which are often found on cheaper electronic drum kits. They also give you the ability to tune them for feel, which is a point I'll be looking at more closely in my next video.
Pad-zones are another thing to look out for when buying an electronic drum kit. Some of the cheaper kits will often come with mainly single zone pad triggers, which are not as dynamic or adjustable as dual zone pads. The same goes for cymbals, for example my Roland TD-30 has a 3-zone ride cymbal, which offers a bell sound, bow and edge.
Another thing you should know before buying your e-kit is that a sturdy frame is going to make the kit so much more playable and resalable in the long term. If you're planning to expand the kit with extra toms or cymbals, then the drum rack needs to have the strength and space (as well as the additional inputs on the brain module) in order to carry them.
