Christian women were sometimes taken as slaves by the Ottoman Empire, and several rose to high ranking positions of prominence. Their children were not born slaves, and many of their sons became wealthy members of the Ottoman elite. Although belly dance is of Eastern origins, it is sometimes called "Greek belly dance" as part of a national effort to reclaim language from a past that some Greeks are ashamed of.
