The mayor of a small town in west Mexico, Yolanda Sanchez, was ambushed on a public road in Cotija and shot dead along with her bodyguard. As per local reports, Yolanda Sanchez was shot at least 19 times. She was elected mayor of Cotija in the state of Michoacan since 2021. The State Prosecutor of Michoacan, Adrian Lopez she had received threats.
"There were a series of threats to the personnel of the municipality. There was a demand (from criminals to the mayor) that the army and the National Guard don't carry out security tasks and that the mayor prevent federal forces from taking these actions," he told the press. The killing comes just hours after Mexico created history by electing its first woman President in Claudia Sheinbaum with a landslide majority.
Before this, Yolanda Sanchez was kidnapped in September 2023 when she was leaving a shopping mall. The kidnapping took place in the city of Guadalajara in the state of Jalisco, which neighbours Michoacan. She was found alive three days later. As per local media reports at the time, the kidnappers belonged to the powerful Jalisco Cartel - New Generation, who allegedly threatened the mayor for opposing the criminal group's takeover of her municipality's police force.
The recent election has been one of the most violent in Mexico's history with as many as 38 candidates being assassinated.
