published on June 25, 2018 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Kawaoka documents active influenza infection in the lungs of living mice for the first time. Here, scientists measured blood flow speed by tracking fluorescent microbeads in the capillaries. Blood flow speed is reduced in mice infected with either H5N1 or H1N1.
